Report Writing In Kindergarten!

Report writing in Kindergarten!  Yes!  It is really amazing as to what 5 and 6 year old children can create.  This unit of study is based on work and research shared by Leah Meremelstein and Lucy Calkins.  Young children are really wonderful thinkers and know an awful lot about their world.

This unit of study focuses on the organization of how to share new knowledge learned with others in the form of a report.

The video shows children doing a partner share with an informational book.  I was so amazed at the language they were using and what they learned from the pictures!

One of our favorite authors that we read and study a lot in Kindergarten to get writing ideas about how to organize our thoughts is Gail Gibbons.  It is always a great idea to share lots of books when writing in any genre!

Here are the steps we follow to creating and designing our reports!

1.  The children choose a topic

2.  We brainstorm ideas about what we want to know

3.  We create a mind map of what we want to know

4.  We create a page for each of our ideas on our mind map.  We write sentences that tell us the information we want to know

5.  We reread our writing and share our ideas with a partner.  This is called a turn and talk!  This gives us an opportunity to clarify our ideas and also an opportunity to share our discoveries.

6.  Then we create and design our illustrations.  Our illustrations match the words we have written.

7.  Then we create a title page, author's note page and a book cover!

8.  Now we are ready to celebrate our books with others!

I have taken pictures of our brain map that we use to organize our ideas, report cover, title page our table of contents page and a page of writing for you to get an idea about the process we go through as well as what each of the stages may look like.  You will see examples of this in the slideshow. The children have done a wonderful job with their reports.  The features we have incorporated from other non fiction texts we have looked at.  Yes!  The children have made connections with other authors and their styles while we have been creating our reports!  Great work!
